The Birds

Ever since I heard about the Decorah Eagles, I've been obsessed with watching the family of eagles hatch and then grow into some fine specimen of bird. It's unlike anything you'd ever get to see otherwise if this live webcam did not exist. Here are a few pictures of the birds and the link so you can also become addicted.

Also, there was an owl in the office today, so I had my picture taken with it. It's been really cool to hear the owls hooting and calling to one another these past few weeks. Glad to see one close!

It is a store full of sustainable, renewable, and recycled goods. Very good place. Toothpaste, razors, composters, flooring, clothing, etc! I highly recommend it, and the owners were very nice! Also they are dog friendly, so you can take your pooch in with you!

I'm fairly certain that no one reads this. Sure, I might average about 8 views a blog, but that's just a view, not a read. And that's just MySpace, no one dare travel into the realm of my Blogosphere!

I can visualize how this happens: The reader (whom I will call You), opens up the blog, skims through to see the length. Short=read; long=skim through for Your name, a silly link, a picture/video, a punchline, or just the word of the day. It's okay, I'm a blog reader, I can relate! That's okay, it's understandable. We all go through life with this social understanding of things. Depending on the society in which we learned, these behaviours may vary widely.

I care about the waste that we as humans produce (as Americans, "land of plenty" mentality, we are huge wasters, for this I am ashamed of US). Tomorrow is Earth Day and I challenge You, I challenge EVERYONE to reduce waste. Try to not throw anything away. Try to reuse everything that can be reused. Try to buy products with less packaging. Try to recycle anything that can be recycled (and in fact try to have nothing that needs to be recycled). Try composting! Just TRY! Please! Trying makes up so much of what we should accomplish in this world. Trying is usually what we give up on. Please just try! [Drew]

Do Re Mi

So I want to start the morning out with much excitement. After reading the HOK Life blog, I had a great wake up video, for which I shall share with you! This is so right up my alley I almost fell out of my seat watching it . . . just watch!

I hope you enjoyed that as much as I did! It makes me think of the night Tim Burns called me Maria Von Trapp! Very sweet! So if anyone reading this wants to get together with me and do an "impromptu" train station dance routine to help advertise a business, call me! Very exciting!

Now, onto other things. Yesterday I was awaken from my nap on the couch to Chris freaking out because his grandparents showed up at our house unannounced! Not that it was a big deal, but the house was a mess and I'm sure they think I'm a terrible house wife. They have no idea how much I hate to clean the house. It's okay though, we all chatted and they left, life went on.

I brought in my "stuff" for HOK St. Louis' Sustainable Swap. Basically we bring in junk that we no longer want, then pull names out of a hat, that person gets to take some one else's "stuff" home. There are prizes to be won as well. Last year some people went home with bikes. I went home with Mikasa. This year I hope to go home with a prize camera! If not that, then a composter! I know, I know, a composter?! I'm big into this, I'm big into preservation of our planet. Say what you want, but I know at the end of the day, I did my part, and THAT makes all the difference!

Earth Day

Today is the big day, it's Earth Day. I took the bus (but that has become my normal routine). I will be a vegetarian for the day also, but that doesn't stray far from reality for me. I eat meat on occasion (including some forms of beef). The problem, is that for the most part I am conscientious about my acts, I use reusable grocery and shopping bags, I avoid using my task lighting at work, I close down my computer at the end of my day, I recycle most of my waste, I use reusable cups and dishes. I take short showers, and wear jeans a couple of times before I wash them. Chris and I are now going to start making our own biodiesel! It's not that I am perfect, or that I have all my ducks in a row for conservatism, but you know, when you do everything you really can most days, it's hard to think of a step further that you can take. I should have worn my T-shirt made of recycled plastic bottles today. Oh well, hindsight is as they say, 20/20!
