Up In Arms

Today, official news spread that Albert Pujols, long time St. Louis Cardinal's hero has signed a deal with another team.  I'm enjoying the controversies, everyone seems to be up in arms over the  $250,000,000 deal.  Some people are commenting how a single person should not earn that kind of money, and if so, it should be teachers and nurses.  Others say, good for him, it's not as if I have never made a choice based on economics.  I can't really say much, other than the fact I am happy we still have Yadi.  I have my opinions and I care not to share them here.  This is one of those topics like politics, religion, the "true" Arbogast  potato salad recipe, and child rearing.  Mum's the word!

But, I thought, since everyone is so up in arms during a time when we should really be more positive and thankful for what we have rather than negative about what others have, I would default to something I started doing years ago, listing some of my favorite things that get me by.

  • The decorated "blue line" Metrolink with it's blue ornaments.
  • Sewing, in fact, making Dani her first holiday dress.  I'd call it a Christmas dress, but it's gray, blue, and white, and has snowflakes on it.
  • Having two functional hands!
  • Having two functional legs!
  • Working a simple 8 hour day and going home to a relatively calm and mediocre life.
  • Doritos when my throat is sore.
  • My pink double layer plastic cup with lid and straw that has a tiny crack in it.
  • Cake pops (nom  nom)
  • Baking, in fact, what I plan to do a lot of this season
  • Getting tweets
  • The "Walking in a Orgy (ahem, 4G) Wonderland" commercial

Bye Justin

It's one of those days when the temperature is just about perfect and the sun is shining down to warm the skin as the cool breeze brushes your hair around your face. It was so nice that I got off the train a stop early so I could walk the extra half mile to the building in which my office resides.

I am however a bit saddened today. I've known for some time that my blog crush Justin was up to something. You might recognize that I've had a blog crush for some time as I've written about him for about a half year now. Well today he posted his Two-Weeks Notice. Since initially "meeting" Justin, we've become friends on Facebook so I've been enlightened to his newest adventures which are always seemingly amusing [for example: "I had to stand in a trough to have a shower this morning", or "Anyone know how/where I can become a certified drivers-ed instructor?", and even as simple as "On a bus to London..."]. It'll just be sad to watch him go. I do have to say though, [I hope he reads this], Justin is much braver than I am. It takes a lot of courage to grasp the concept of being unhappy with a career choice; then to leave it behind and try something new. It's scary, and I commend him for his change! So I say good luck to him, but I know his luck from having read his blogs, there's really no point to wishing any luck to him! But he knows he has a pal in St. Louis, and that's just swell for now!

I did do something different yesterday, which consisted of going to a food demo show! I've done this once before though never blogged about it. A friend, Kelly S., works at a place called The Kitchen Conservatory. It's a cool place where they sell kitchen/cooking/baking items, but also where they teach cooking classes. What happens at the demo shows I've gone to, she [or the chef of the class] cooks a three course meal (and cocktail) in front of an audience of [at most] 14 people all stationed around a counter where she works. We the audience then get to eat her delicious food! Well, last night's was all about lavender [my favorite smell]. If you ever get the opportunity, please try the Honey-Lavendar Ice Cream. It was divine! You can read all about the stuff we got to try at Kelly's blog found at barbaricgulp.com!

Since I'm around today, I shall share a word...
amish: [urban slang definition] To be completely grounded and deprived of all means of modern technology. [a.k.a my mom]

I Feel Like Crap

I feel like crap today because I'm sick. Not pretend sick either, I've got the high fever, sore throat, achy body, pounding head, etc.

I shouldn't be at work, but I had to finish a few things up, so I came in today.

Good news is that on my way in, I ran into Amanda at Metrolink (or rather she stalked me to the Metrolink, which was lovely). Plus I'm leaving early anyway, so the day can't be all bad, right?

Thank you to those people that responded yesterday to tell me how they were doing! It's hard to keep up with people, so by you reading, and commenting, I got to see that everyone is surviving. Lots of ups and downs these days, the only thing we can do is keep our chins up! [Thanks to Becky J., Holly, Nicole, Mike P., Kelly, Amanda, Jen S.]

Since I'm not feeling well, I'm done writing for the day.

Word...
roll deep: Going somewhere with a large amount of people. Also "roll thick".
In Use: We rollin' twenty deep in da club.

Tomorrow I Take Off

I'm very excited, as today is my last full day of this week. Tomorrow I take off to Dublin/London/Glasgow. I just checked the weather and it should be in the 70's with rain. I should plan to pack an extra set of pants and maybe less shorts.

Tomorrow will be hectic. I am having Chris drop me off at a Metrolink station so I can take Metro downtown to work for a few hours. I think sometime around 10 or 11 I'll leave work to Metro to the airport. My flight isn't until 3, but with the President coming to St. Louis for the All-Star game, I have to be prepared for hassles at the airport. Metrolink to the airport is about 45-50 minutes from downtown, so if I leave at 10, I should get there around 11, and I'll just eat lunch inside security and have about 3 hours to kill. I'd better pack another book!

It has just occured to me that I used the words President and kill in the same blog! Egads! What do you think will happen?

So just a quick review of my weekend and then I'm off to work as much as I can possibly stand today!

Saturday, Amanda and I went for a bike ride, partly for the ride, partly for the geocaching experience. We looked but found no geocach. We also rode in the rain, which was slick, but fun.

Sunday, Eva and I went for a hike up at Pere Marquette State Park. We are getting Eva prepared for her trip to the Smokies. While there, we looked for a geocach, and surprisingly enough found it. Lucky for me it had a Travel Bug so I get to take that with me to the UK to deposit in a different geocach! I am very excited about this!

Words-
ungood: Surfer term for "bad". Also used in George Orwell's bovel 1984.
drunk catcher: An obstacle found in one's path that, while drunk, provides, an incredible challenge to avoid. This includes cracks in the sidewalk, low-hanging tree branches, abnormal curbs, and members of the opposite sex who are of questionable attractiveness. Generally these are ranked by class, or degree of difficulty: class 1 being the lowest and class 5 being the highest.
In Use: The captain totally tweaked his ankle last night on a class 5 drunk catcher.

I Had An Interesting Day

I know Mike C. will secretly appreciate this blog. It is after all my second blog of the day. I feel compelled to write! I had an interesting day!

So for starters, we, or rather HOK won the Missouri Baptist Hospital job. This is a huge win for us! The structures group, of which I am part, is the primary structural engineer! Yippee skippee!

Second, we, or rather HOK had the director for the Missouri Audubon Society speak at our office today. I went into it thinking, "birds, woo-hoo birds" (said in the lamest voice possible). But as I listened to the guy, I really liked him. He talked more than about birds, but habitats, and travel. It was really cool and has inspired me to consider a bird bath and feeder in the back yard where the cardinals like to hang out. I worry though, that the dogs will kill a few birds.

Third,we, or rather HOK went on a tour of a recycling facility this evening. It was so awesome. It was everything I had hoped it would be. It was like being IN an episode of How It's Made! I loved it! I want to elaborate, and tell you how cool it was to watch the materials sort, and to watch the simple mechanics of the machines perform spectacular feats . . . but really I can't find words that would do it justice!

Now if you read my first blog of today, you will have known that I started this morning by running from my car to the train. I have ended my day by running from the train to my car in order to avoid being completely soaked. Didn't help, I was soaked through!

I will try to get a little blogging done this weekend, so stay tuned!

Yep, Busy Busy Busy!

I'm going to start this blog off by tracking back in time. A time I call . . . "yesterday"!

I left work late to get a couple of extra hours in since I won't be at work on Friday (going to KC Fri-Sun). As it usually goes on evenings that I don't have an automobile, I took the Metrolink to the 5th & Missouri East St. Louis station. The bus to Collinsville shows up about quarter to the hour. I get there a bit early to ensure I don't miss it. While sitting there, Eva calls to tell me there is a major drug bust at the meth house just a few houses over from her house. We are talking about the SWAT truck, SWAT team with guns aimed, and PERCUSSION GRENADES! PERCUSSION GRENADES!! Damn the luck of my profession; I want to use percussion grenades!

Anyway, for those of you who may not really know who I am (and even for those people that do); I used to live at Eva and Jami's place in West Granite. That is West Granite City, Illinois. Now, it's not the best part of town. It's considered "the other side of the tracks", literally it is the other side of the tracks. But I liked it well enough, still do. It's the same atmosphere as any town/city. You have the wealthy, you have the poor, and you have everything in between. West Granite just seems to house most of the drug producers. Meth makers. Duane. Duane got his ass some percussion grenades yesterday!

Now, back to the bus . . . I was waiting with a large group of people for the bus. I've done this often. I've never felt scared, awkward, or in danger. Yesterday changed that!

The bus arrives, we all stand to get on, one by one filing onto the bus offering our tokens for a ride. I offered the fellow by me the "next in line" spot, he declined and said, "after you". I thought it was polite, thought nothing else of it. I got on and went to my well chosen seat. I put a lot of thought into the seat I choose (shown below).

My Seat on the Bus

This particular seat has a plastic thingy behind it so that no one can reach over the seat. I can sit in the aisle seat and set my belongings in the window seat. The only major downfall to this seat is that the seat across the aisle faces my seat. This is where the "polite guy" sat (see below). From now on, "polite guy" is now "weird guy".

Weird Guy's Seat on the Bus

I had headphones on, which I thought was the universal signal to say "I do not want to speak". I guess he took it as "I am just listening to music until someone bothers me, please come bother me". He started his line of questioning, "how was your day", "how was work", "what do you do", "what does that mean", "how long have you been doing it", "does it pay well", "do you like it", "where did you go to school", "where did you grow up" . . . etc. I seriously started to feel as though this were the East St. Inquisition. There was finally a break in speech. I turned my head, put the headphones on, turned my body so it's language said "leave me alone", and pretended to be busy with my cell phone. Yep, busy busy busy.

Then he lightly touches my arm which scared the crap out of me. What is much more scary is that when I turned to see what it was that he wanted, he was standing, rather haunched next to me watching my every move with the cell phone. I think he got close to smell me or something of that nature. He kept touching my arm despite my uncomfortable inching away from him. This is a major violation of my personal space for sure! Thankfully he got off at the horse racing track which he referred to as his "second home". Before exiting the bus he grabbed my shoulder, held it for what felt like hours, and told me how great it was to talk to me.

Ugh!

Anyway . . . so now fast forward to this morning. I took Metrolink today, but completely bypassed the bus option (imagine that)! I had to run to catch my train; that's okay. Nothing like a brisk run to get your heart rate up in the morning! And alas, here I am, at work, blogging. Yep, busy busy busy!

But tonight I will be taking a tour of St. Louis' largest recycling plant. I am very excited. I would take some photos to share, but that's not allowed.

I have a few things I wanted to comment on this morning. 1) Yes Drew, magnets would be a good idea, and surprisingly some one else mentioned it yesterday, jokingly though. It would be great if we embraced what is natural to make structures, roadways, etc. In this case, no chance of magnets. I will have to come up with something much more clever to make my stair float, yet withstand gravity and lateral loading. This is going to take some Voodoo, if anyone has any suggestions, I am totally open! 2) Fuck, Becky, warn me by saying "These images are not suitable for Stephy's eyes". Ugh! 3) Mike, you shall be amazed by what I will learn about soccer. I'll make you proud! Oh, and from Chris, "soccer's for girls". 4) Watch Amélie, it's one of my favorite movies, and I watched it yesterday. 5) I will be in Kansas City Friday through Sunday to visit Erika and family as well as to catch the English Beat. I will try to blog, but I might have to disappoint Mike by not blogging more than once. Sorry friend!

I will leave you now with the word of the day . . .

downchuck: the opposite of upchucking. When you vomit a bit, and you accidentally swallow it. Leaves a nasty taste in your mouth and can often happen many times if you are hungover. [Editor's note: gross]

Excerpts From Yesterday

Yesterday was an interesting day for me, I wrote about it yesterday, here are some excerpts with an addition at the end!

Okay, so first of all it’s Tuesday! When I woke up this morning I had thought it was a different day, but I checked and it is for sure Tuesday! I meandered into work late today, mostly because my eye lids refused to open for me, but also because my building was hypothetically supposed to be blown up today (long story). Right about now, the CIA and FBI are scanning this because the words “building” and “blown up” are in the same message. Don’t worry ladies and gents, it isn’t really, and wasn’t really going to happen (hence the usage of hypothetical); so go on and look for other terrorists more likely to perform devious acts!

Now back to my story! I wandered to my desk and everything was in a disarray as I had left it the day before when I rushed (as quickly as public transit can rush) home to my pillows! “Oh well” I thought to myself, “I guess this means I DO have to work today”! As soon as I set my bag down and hit the button on my computer that makes him think, a flock of humans came and perched at my desk with stacks full of papers to organize! The confused expression on my face didn’t deter them either! They kept bringing papers and saying something to the effect “Good she isn’t dead, she can organize these now”! I had wondered if they thought I was really dead? I asked, and indeed they thought I was a goner! What I find most interesting about this scenario is that while they thought I might in fact be dead, no one bothered to call my house, inquire with the appropriate officials, or come by to check on me. I guess they had assumed my rotting corpse would give off enough of an odor that someone would find me. The gratitude goes a long way for me! Most people knowing me would read this and see the sarcasm spewing out of the previous phrase, don’t worry if you didn’t catch it. A lot of my sarcasm goes undetected and I often appreciate that people don’t always know how cynical I truly am!

Anyway, where was I, oh right, getting a hold of me. So they did send me a million e-mails (or more like 23). They even had a co-worker text me. I didn’t respond to anything. I don’t think it quite qualifies as dead, but considering I rarely choose to not answer someone, they knew something was wrong. In fact there was something wrong. I was not at work and I was sleeping. 20 hours of sleeping! One might understand my confusion of day-of-week having known I slept for 20 damned hours! And considering that I was in a semi-conscience state of existence, I would say I was at least partially dead. That of course is a touchy subject with many. I was even asked today at lunch if I had a suicide pact. I at first thought “Really?”, but then I quietly recalled the past month and it occurred to me where one might get that impression, so I simply shrugged it off and said “No, I won’t make a pact, it will just be me and blue Kool-Aid”. That led to a conversation about Kool-Aid.

So when I was being returned to the office after lunch, I walked by my coworker Joe Berra! Joe is an older guy, really awesome, rugged around the edges and never passes up the opportunity to hold my hand. It started out as hi-fives, that turned into hi-five-secret-handshakes. Now I just give him a five and he holds my hand while he talks to me. Today he asked me where I had been hiding for the past couple of weeks. He knows I wasn’t hiding, that I in fact wandered the halls at work teary eyed while gawkers stared and whispered! He was being polite, an etiquette that often gets lost on my dry sense of humor. Knowing however that his line of questioning was polite and mostly fishing for answers, I gave him one. “I’ve been hiding at my desk wishing it were a rock, how ‘bout you?” to which he responded, “all right, how are you holding up?” My first instinct was to answer him with a lesson in human anatomy, explaining the skeleton and such, but yet again I knew he was fishing, so I gave him an answer. “I’m alive which is about all I can say, how ‘bout you?” He responded by nodding and holding my hand tighter. I hadn’t quite expected that. I in fact expected quite the opposite. You are familiar, I am sure with passersby to whom you briefly speak. For instance, a passerby says “how do you do?” and you respond, “spectacular, how ‘bout you?” only to get no response or the obligatory “you take care too” which was in no way part of your brief conversation! I had really expected something along the lines of “you take care too”. I was quite astonished giving Joe Berra more credit than before. He’s also great to hug as well. I try to keep that to a minimum while at work!

After organizing papers all day, and randomly slacking off at work because I was too tired to actually work, I ended up catching the Metrolink to my car affectionately named Jacob, after the Jacobian Matrix that only true math geeks would know about. The whole train ride to Jake I thought about how I should have parked at the Fairview Heights Station because it was so much closer to Millstadt, but I instead used auto-pilot and drove to Emy Park Station. Doh! What was I thinking? Oh right, I wasn't thinking, it's all coming back to me now! I was about halfway there when I had a coughing fit on the train the indicated just how sick I actually am as opposed to the facade of being well! A seemingly nice guy got up and moved from me. I don't blame him, I wouldn't want my cold either. When I got to the Station, it was raining a little bit. I like rain a lot. The dreary weather is just something I like. Other weather is good too, but cool rain just feels good. Anyway, to stay on track with this story, I get into Jacob and drive to Millstadt for another wake/visitation.

The wake was not so much as one would expect. Yes there were people that were upset, and people crying. It was sad. There were lots of great photos of Grandma. I got to talk to Grandpa. I reminded him of the time I accidentally called him instead of Amanda. He apparently thought I seemed insane, to which I replied, "Well that's because I am just a little insane". But the point to which I am getting is that, with Amanda and her way too awesome co-workers, we laughed. I laughed so hard I actually had tears. This came at the expense of Ray who is now my Facebook friend. I have a crush on Ray. Maybe I have a crush on his personality, not unlike my blog crush on Justin Z.! In any case, that is really NOT what I am talking about, I'm talking about people laughing. I think it is good to laugh at funerals! People have lots of time to cry, so why not share great stories by which people would want to be remembered. It was pouring when we all finally left, and all agreed to meet down the street at a seemingly quaint diner/pizza joint. Seemingly quaint was just the beginning!

We all met up, Ray and I noticed Amanda was annoyed. Everyone got their orders and Amanda and I went for a walk to Grandma's house just around the block. It was raining, but the cool rains that I enjoy. It's sad to see Amanda so upset because she typically has a superior "tough guy" facade. The house means a lot to her. I hope it stays in the family for many more years! I won't dwell on her venting, that's hers, not mine!

We got back to our seemingly quaint food place, food was there. I learned at this point that I did not order food that I was supposed to order. Oh well, I hadn't really intended on eating, I just felt bad for everyone that had intended on eating some of my food! We heard some great stories at dinner. We all, I genuinely believe, had an enjoyable time.

Our seemingly quaint food joint turned sour about this point. The waitress shoved her way into our group, "I need your dishes", with a later comment something to the effect, "I'm going to wash the dishes and you need to leave so we can close up". We made a couple of jokes but she didn't laugh. We really annoyed her. I can't say I am unused to this reaction. I believe I annoy most people regularly! I really didn't say that as proudly as it sounded!

We were finishing up our drinks when we noticed that there was a single Blue Moon pilsner glass sitting on the table (and we really didn't want to deal with the mean lady washing it). Ray had ordered the Blue Moon. We had joked that he should steal it. We intensely joked that he should steal it. One young lady who I will call Assilem, put the glass in her purse. There was prompting by everyone at the table, and stronger encouragement from others. In any case, we as a group left the establishment with one stolen glass. We all took a walk to Grandma's house. It was freezing out. I don't say that jokingly, I believe it was really below freezing. When we returned we were affronted by the mean lady who complained she was missing one Blue Moon pilsner glass. We all stared. She then pointed to Ray and said, "I believe it was you that was drinking out of it". At this point Ray walks up and shows he does not have it on him, but mean lady really wanted this glass. Assilem joked about Ray slipping the glass into her purse when she wasn't looking and then wanted him to take the fall for it. If there had been a bus, he would have been under it! Moments later Assilem is telling Ray to "grow some balls" while the nice Mr. Policeman came out to find out why we were wasting his time. Several of us tried to ease the tension by telling him we took it and gave it back, all was fine, we were leaving but he still needed a name for his report. It wasn't any one person's fault in my opinion, but Assilem wanted Ray to take the blame since he drank from the glass. I offered up my name for the cop for two reasons. One, perhaps the most guilty of our party would feel guilty enough to take the blame (which eventually happened), and secondly, I was after all a witness far too willing to tell the truth about the whole ordeal. It was late, besides, it's not like I have never had my name in a police report! Ray protested, the cop annoyed by us wanted to know in whose possession the glass was in when it left. Assilem, thrower of people under the bus, spoke up and gave her info. The cop had already told us no one was in trouble, we were to just leave. She didn't make it easy, but we eventually were told to go. We said our goodbyes and left.

It made for an interesting night. A wake I will never forget!
